Equinux released The Tube 2.5, which includes the new TubeToGo service for remote viewing of your favorite programs. TubeToGo enables users to view recorded programs online, as well as the ability to schedule recordings.

Miglia ships TVMini2

December 11, 2007   0 Comments

Miglia's New TVMini² is the smallest avaliable digital TV available, and from what we can see it is. The slim design allows for neighboring USB port access. This DVB-T tuner is USB 2.0 powered and features a high performance tuner and demodulator able to capture HD resolutions (requires dual g5 or intel processors).

The Tuner and Demodulator technology was borrowed fro m the in-car entertainment market, translating to a much stronger signal, then the previous model. The TVMini² captures video in MPEG-2 digital quality, allowing for easy editing and video management.

Included with the TVMini² is the latest version of Equinox's The Tube software, which now includes Timed Recording, EPG, and open XMLTV standards, which we have covered before.

Unfortunately the TVMini² will do us Americans little good with limited DVB-T broadcasts, but Europe can take full advantage of this innovative product. The TVMini² sells for £59.99 or €78.99, and includes a 2 year manufactures warranty.

The Tube 1.5 Public Beta

August 2, 2007   0 Comments

Equinux, the creators of MediaCentral, have a public beta of its The Tube software available for download. The 1.5 version offers new and improved features such as, timed recording, electronic program guide and several user interface improvements.

Timed recordings allow you to record television shows, specials, and movies automatically. This can be achieved by entering a start and stop time, or selecting a program through the program guide. The Tube will also warn you if two scheduled programs overlap, so you don't miss them both!

The Electronic Program Guide, is exactly what you would expect. A complete listing of upcoming Television shows. The quick search allows you to locate your programs, and ignore the rest. One major step forward is the use of XMLTV, an open source project taht collects tv schedules from different countries and provides them in an open format. The Tube imports these and allows you to assign them to specific channels.

This latest version, 1.5 Public Beta, is available for download now. So head on over to the Equinux website and check it out!

MediaCentral get a new engine in 2.6.2

July 26, 2007   0 Comments

Equinux, one of the leaders in MacHTPC software, has release MediaCentral 2.6.2. This latest version of their popular software includes several revamped features, additional PPC support, and stability improvements. Several minor fixes to the audio side have also been made.

The most significant update is the TV Module. MediaCentral now features the same TV engine used in The Tube, their software for TubeStick. Utilizing the Altivec-Engine for de-interlacing video, PPC users will notice significant performance improvements. Video quality should be smoother and with less skipping and hesitation, which is always encouraging to hear.

In addition to the new TV Module engine, TV channel searching and audio track selection has been improved. Can't forget about the Czechs as they get improved localized channel information. All the other features, such as YouTube browsing, iPhoto viewing, and playing your favorite iTunes are still exceeding our expectations for a HTPC application. (We just wish the demo was longer.)

To check out Equinux's MediaCentral 2.6.2 you may download the demo version from their website. For existing users who have registered versions (2.x and later), the update is free.

The Tube, Time Shifting, and Déjà Vu!

May 10, 2007   0 Comments

Equinux is announcing 'The Tube' v. 1.1. With this release they are introducing several new features including time-shifting, deja vu, and an AppleTV export. The Tube is of course the new PVR software that has replaced EyeTV on newer Miglia devices.

Timeshifting isn't new for most of us. Its the same technique used by Tivo's and DVR's that allow you to pause live TV and pick it back up again. I love the fact that the Tube now allows for this, as EyeTV does a poor job of it (unless your are recording the show at the same time). The length of time you can shift is dependent on how long you've had the channel live and the size of your hard drive. So size does matter!

Déjà Vu, is quite brilliant. With the extended time-shifting capabilities, The Tube will record the entire show, even if your a few minutes late. Simply rewinding the show to the beginning by time shifting, you now get the entire program, rather then just 'most of it'.

Lastly The Tube has extended its export feature to include AppleTV, iPod Videos and iMovie. Yeah!
